Co-Program Director – Family Practice Enhanced Skills

The Postgraduate Program in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia, invites applications from Family Physicians for the position of Co-Program Director in the Enhanced Skills Program.

The program currently offers 41 FTE resident positions in Enhanced Skills training in a variety of areas.  These positions are offered to family physicians or specialists in the province of British Columbia for the purpose of developing specific advanced skills for which there is an identified community need. The Program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Applicants must be a Certificant of the College of Family Physicians of Canada or equivalent, or willing to obtain CCFP certification within four years of appointment and must also be eligible for B.C. medical licensure.  Educational and administrative experience in residency training is preferred.

The Enhanced Skills Co-Program Directors are responsible for overseeing the development, quality and delivery of all enhanced skills R3 programs of the UBC Postgraduate Program, and for ensuring that accreditation standards of the CFPC are met. The successful applicant, along with the current Enhanced Skills Program Director, will be responsible for administering a fair and transparent selection process for all candidates to all programs, supporting faculty development for enhanced skills, directors and preceptors, and overseeing development, updating, and assessment of Enhanced skills curriculum.

The successful candidate will have a proven record of leadership, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a vision and commitment to train physicians to meet the medical skill needs of the communities across the province of B.C.

The successful applicant reports to the Postgraduate Dean, and to the Program Director for Family Practice. It is anticipated that the position will require approximately 0.25 FTE.  The expected start date for the job is January 2024.

Responsibilities

Together with the Enhanced Skills Co-Director:

  • Oversee the 41 FTE resident positions allotted to the UBC Enhanced Skills program according to UBC policies and procedures. The number of FTE positions is negotiated annually and is therefore subject to change. These positions currently include:
  1. Category 1 Programs
    • Emergency Medicine (5 sites)
    • St. Paul’s Hospital (7 x 1-year)
      • Surrey (5 x 1-year)
      • Nanaimo (2 x 1-year)
      • Kamloops (2 x 1-year)
      • Prince George/Northern (2 x 1-year)
    • Family Practice Anesthesia (5 x 1-year)
    • Palliative Care (5 x 1-year)
    • Addiction Medicine (2 x 1-year)
    • Sport & Exercise Medicine (1 x 1-year)
    • Care of the Elderly (2 x 6 months each)
    • Obstetrical Surgical Skills (2 x 6 months each)
    • Clinical Scholar Program (2 x 2-years part-time)
  2. Category 2 Programs of 3- 6 months in length in the following areas:
    • Global Health
    • Hospital Medicine
    • Palliative Care
    • Addiction Medicine
    • Gender & Sexual Health
    • Low-Risk Obstetrics
    • GP Oncology
    • Indigenous Health
    • H2SUM (HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Mental Health, & Substance Use)
    • EM
    • Self-Design
  • Ensure that the accreditation standards are met and maintained in all programs as outlined by the College of Family Physicians of Canada
  • Chair the Enhanced Skills Residency Program Committee, which includes Program Directors and Program Leads from all Category 1 and 2 programs, Lead Residents, and Administrators. Meet at least quarterly and ensure appropriate minutes are maintained
  • Chair the Enhanced Skills Clinical Competency Committee to review and monitor residents in difficulty. Meet at least quarterly and ensure appropriate minutes are maintained
  • Collaborate with Family Practice Program Competency Committee/Performance Support Team as necessary.
  • Initiate and assist in the development of new programs to address the medical skills requirements of communities in need
  • Liaise with BC Ministry of Health and UBC PGME to negotiate residency allocation and program development (bi-annual and ad hoc)
  • Liaise with other stakeholders as needed, including: CFPC, Rural Education Action Plan (REAP), Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCBC), National Enhanced Skills Program Directors, Canadian Armed Forces, UBC Undergraduate Medical Program
  • Oversee the administration of a fair and transparent selection process for all candidates in all programs. This includes oversite of CaRMS match for Category 1 programs (excluding Clinician Scholar Program)
  • Ensure adequate advertising/publicizing of new and current programs
  • Support Faculty Development for Enhanced Skills Program Directors, Program Leads, and preceptors
  • Oversee ongoing CQI and program evaluation at both the Enhanced Skills and Category 1/Category 2 Program levels
  • Oversee ongoing curriculum development
  • Coordinate activities including a welcome event to promote preparation for success,  resident collegiality, educational explorations, and residency completion
  • Promote resident wellbeing and a safe, supportive learning environment for all enhanced skills programs
  • Work with the Program Coordinator to maintain a program budget based on the PGME Residency Program Funding Guidelines
  • Advocate for appropriate funding for resident, faculty, and admin support with PGME and Ministry of Health
  • Meet tri-annually with the Postgraduate Deans
  • Meet monthly with Family Practice Program Director
  • Additionally, attendance at the following meetings is expected:
    • Experience in medical education-preferably postgraduate education
    • Teaching experience of medical learners and familiarity with resident assessment
    • Strong communication and advocacy skills
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Willingness to engage in collaborative leadership, particularly encompassing administrative teams

Time Commitment: 0.25 FTE (1.25 days/week)
