Betty Calam, MD, CCFP, MCISc FCFP is an Associate Professor with the Department of Family Practice. She did her MD at UBC, postgraduate training at Dalhousie University, and completed a Masters degree in Family Medicine at Western University. After moving to Vancouver from rural family practice on Haida Gwaii, Dr. Calam became the medical director of the St. Paul’s Hospital Family Practice Teaching Ward in 1994, the director of the Division of Aboriginal People’s Health in the Department of Family Practice from 2001 to 2003, and the director of the St. Paul’s Site of the UBC Family Practice Residency Program from 2003 to the present. Her research is centred in Indigenous health, medical education, decolonizing methodologies and collaborative community-based participatory projects. Her educational leadership promotes social justice, equity, academic rigour and the wellbeing of trainees throughout residency.
