The Postgraduate Program of the Department of Family Practice, University of British Columbia, invites applications for the position of Site Director for the CCFP-EM Program, Kamloops Site, with the Family Practice Enhanced Skills Residency Program.
This is a comprehensive training program, which creates expertise in emergency medicine care. The endpoint is the creation of community leaders in this area of medicine. There are currently 2.0 FTE (2 residents in a one-year training position) CCFP-EM Kamloops Enhanced Skills resident positions per year, although numbers are variable based on government funding. The Program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Applicants should hold a Certificate of Added Competency (CAC) [or equivalent] in the domain of Emergency Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and be licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. Educational and administrative experiences in residency training are preferred.
The position involves supervision of training, including curriculum development, evaluation and mentoring of residents for one year of residency training, faculty development, and participation with provincial emergency medicine educational initiatives. The position requires close communication and collaboration with both the Department of Family Practice and the Department of Emergency Medicine. The position reports to the Program Director(s) of the Family Practice CCFP-EM Program, and the Program Director(s) of the Enhanced Skills Program. It is anticipated that the position will require the equivalent of.13 FTE [approx $22,750 per annum] and will be of a term of one year initially. Job Description
The CCFP-EM Kamloops Site Director is responsible for overall administration and direction of the Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine Program at the Kamloops Site and its associated rotations. The incumbent reports to the CCFP(EM) Program Director (EM PD) and the Enhanced Skills Co-Program Directors (ES Co-PDs). Responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership/Collaboration
- Collaborate with the Enhanced Skills Co-PDs, the EM PD, and the other Enhanced Skills Program Directors to support and maintain an innovative and dynamic residency training program throughout the department of Family Medicine.
- Participate in the development of UBC CCFP(EM) goals and policies.
- Administer overall program policy at the site.
Curriculum and Program Delivery
- Participate in the resident selection process, including file review and interviews.
- Organize orientation for new residents.
- Help develop and monitor academic and scholarly activities that support attainment of program objectives, including facilitating resident collaboration in the process.
- Act as resident advisor, including developing an education plan with each resident, conducting regular periodic reviews with each resident to assess progress, and dealing with issues of resident well-being.
- Maintain a residency office with appropriate administrative support.
- Maintain resident records.
- Work with the EM PD to implement novel teaching models, including simulation-based learning, interprofessional education, and technology-enhancing approaches, to meet diverse learner needs.
- Interact with the EM Program SIM lead and local SIM resources to ensure appropriate delivery of the EM program SIM curriculum.
- Help prepare residents for the CCFP(EM) certification exam including, but not limited to, administration of the national practice written exam.
Quality Improvement and Accreditation
- Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement in emergency medicine education through systematic program evaluations and mechanisms to gather feedback from graduates, faculty, and learners to inform targeted improvements.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards (Standards of Accreditation for Residency Programs (The Red Book) from the College of Family Physicians of Canada), including the development and oversight of structured, competency-based assessment frameworks.
- Coordinate overall curriculum delivery and rotations at the site consistent with CCFP(EM) Residency Program objectives.
Resident and Faculty Development
- Ensure equitable access to resources and advocate for resident well-being, particularly around residents’ physical, psychological, and cultural safety.
- Recruit and evaluate clinical teachers, ensuring all faculty have appropriate faculty appointments.
- Provide faculty development for the local EM faculty.
- Ensure there is an in-training assessment program that plans/monitors the progress of the trainee towards the achievement of outlined competencies throughout the training year.
Collaboration and Governance
- Participate in the CCFP-EM program’s CCC (Clinical Competence Committee).
- Identify residents in difficulty (academic or personal) and, in conjunction with the EM PD, ES Co-PDs, and the Family Practice Residency Competency Committee, develop support and remedial plans for residents.
- Participate in the CCFP-EM Program’s Residency Program Committee.
- Assist the EM PD in administering the CCFP(EM) program budget.
- Ensure program activities are in keeping with the Resident Doctors of BC agreements and University policies.
- Represent the CCFP(EM) Program at the hospital level and assist the ES Co-PDs in representing the EM program at the University and Health Authority level.
