Talk Abstract

The BC Primary Health Care Research Network (BC-PHCRN) sits in the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, School of Population and Public Health, is part of the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) Canadian Primary Care Research Network (CPCRN) and houses the BC arm of the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (BC-CPCSSN). The goal of BC-PHCRN is to encourage, facilitate, and support collaborations between government, health authorities, health professionals, patients and researchers. Together, we prioritize patient-identified needs to seek out, develop, and facilitate the adoption of health care innovations to improve BC’s health care delivery system.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Rubee Dev, PhD, MPH – Assistant Professor of Global Health & Primary Health Care Nursing at the UBC School of Nursing and Centre for Health Services and Policy Research. Dr. Dev is a principal investigator of the BC-PHCRN and co-director of the BC arm of the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (BC-CPCSSN). Her work entails extensive research to identify the data gaps and opportunities for action in meeting the needs of global maternal and child health and improving care delivery in primary health care settings; mainly through collaboration, partnerships, and knowledge translation.

Dr. Nathaniel Hawkins, MBChB, MD, MPH – Associate Professor and cardiologist dual trained in heart failure and electrophysiology at UBC. He is Medical Lead for Quality and Research at Cardiac Services BC and Director of Research for the UBC Division of Cardiology. His research examines cardiovascular outcomes, health services, and comorbidities in patients with heart failure, arrhythmia, and pulmonary disease. He is Co-Principal Investigator for the MAPLE-CHF and international SYMPHONY heart failure screening trial and member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canadian Heart Function Alliance. His work aims to integrate systems of care and utilize data to deliver population health interventions.

Dr. Sabrina Wong,PhD, MSc – Professor in UBC School of Nursing, and Co-Chair of Canadian Primary Care Research Network. Dr. Wong’s research examines the organization and delivery of health care services within the context of primary health care. A recognized leader in research involving patient-reported quality of care, her work contributes to informing practice and system level interventions that seek to decrease health inequalities among Canadian residents, including people who face multiple disadvantages in accessing and using the health care system. Her long-standing commitment to research has significantly contributed to the application of primary health care in helping to reduce health and health care inequalities.

Dr. Andy Gibb, PhD – Data Manager for BC-CPCSSN. Andy has an extensive, published track record in scientific research and manages the programming for CPCSSN, as well as implements automation algorithms and ensures data privacy and security meet the highest standards.

Dr. Daniel Ngui – Graduated from UBC School of Physiotherapy (’94), UBC Medical school (’98) and St. Paul’s Hospital Family Medicine (’00) and has been practicing since 2000, and in team-based community clinics for over a decade. He is affiliated with both Vancouver Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital. As the medical director at Fraser Street Medical located in Vancouver British Columbia, his goal is to help create an ideal team environment to help in the evolution of a highly effective, compassionate and comprehensive team focusing on health promotion, EMR population health management, chronic disease prevention and improved primary care access.
