R3Enhanced Skills Program
The Postgraduate Program of the Department of Family Practice, University of British Columbia, invites applications from Family Physicians for the position of Co-Program Director for Family Practice Anesthesia, with the R3 Enhanced Skills Residency Program.
This is a comprehensive training program, which provides a blend of high volume/high acuity tertiary centre exposure alongside rural FPA educational experiences. The goals is to prepare our residents for the unique challenges they will face working in rural surgical and critical care environments with limited resources. There are currently 5.0 FTE (5 residents in a one year training position) Family Practice Anesthesia resident positions per year, although numbers are variable based on government funding. The Program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Applicants should hold a Certificate of Added Competency (CAC) [or equivalent] in the domain of Family Practice Anesthesia from the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and be licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. Educational and administrative experiences in residency training are preferred.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of leadership, excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and clinical expertise in the field of Family Practice Anesthesia. They should be committed to providing a high quality experience in Anesthesia that is grounded in principles and competencies of Family Practice. They should have the vision and commitment to building the capacity of UBC Family Practice Anesthesia training across the province.
The position involves supervision of training, including curriculum development, evaluation and mentoring of residents for one year of residency training, faculty development, and participation with provincial FPA care educational initiatives. The position requires close communication and collaboration with both the Department of Family Practice and the Department of Anesthesia, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics, that are based in Vancouver. It is anticipated that the position will require the equivalent of approximately $15,000.00 per year (.085 FTE). The Co-Program Directors are assisted by an administrative staff.

Job Description
Along with the other Co-Program Director, the Co-Program Director for Family Practice Anesthesia will be responsible for the overall administration and direction of the Family Practice Anesthesia Program at its various rotations. The incumbent reports to the Enhanced Skills Program Director (ES-PD). The Director is a member of the Enhanced Skills Resident Program Committee, and works closely with the ES-PD, the Department of Family Practice and the FPA faculty in the delivery of the program.

Director of PGY3 Enhanced Skills for Family Practice for educational concerns and planning.
Description of Portfolio/Responsibilities
- Oversee the implementation of the PGY3 educational program for residents including the development and monitoring of the delivery of the formal teaching curriculum for the residents.
- Ensure that accreditation standards are maintained for their program as outlined by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
- Encourage and promote novel teaching/learning models within their PGY3 program.
- Exploring and enhancing opportunities to further expand the training of residents from a site base to a provincial base mandate.
- Ensuring the emphasis on and connection to family practice throughout the continuum of the resident training.
- Provide support to preceptors to assist in the timely completion of online evaluations of, and verbal feedback to, residents.
- Attend/chair regular FPA Clinical Competency Committee meetings and Residency Program Committee meetings with faculty and staff.
- Complete year end FITERS.
- Provide support to preceptors/supervisors.
- Assist with residents in difficulty by collaborating with the resident, preceptors and the Director of the PGY3 Enhanced Skills program. Assist in the development of learning plans and/or remediation contracts if deemed necessary.
- Collaborate with the residents in their program to review the training program, identify problem areas and develop strategies to improve the delivery of the Enhanced Skills program.
- Undertake cyclical program evaluation in order to review and implement program-wide updates to training locations, curriculum, faculty development and preceptor assessment in a CQI process.
- Ensure that residents are properly oriented to the UBC environment and their program including all program policies and expectations.
- Ensure residents are prepared for clinical duties by attending to College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC educational licensure and prescribing privileges and UBC PGME requirements.
- Develop a positive working relationship with the PGY3 Enhanced Skills Program Director and other Enhanced Skills Programs Directors.
- Attend the Enhanced Skills Residency Program Committee meetings and other subcommittees, where appropriate, to assist in developing and maintaining the Enhanced Skills residency training program.
- Participate in the resident selection process for their area of focus.
- Collaborate with the Director of PGY3 Enhanced Skills Family Practice and the other Enhanced Skills Family Practice Program Directors to support and maintain an innovative and dynamic residency training program throughout the department of Family Medicine.
- Collaborate with the Program Director of the UBC FRCPC Anesthesiology Residency to arrange and oversee educational experiences for appropriate postgraduate trainees in FPA.
- Collaborate with the Program Director of the UBC FRCPC Anesthesiology Residency to align educational objectives and activities and foster a common community of practice.
- Attends the UBC Enhanced Skills Residency Programs Committee 4 times per year
- Encourage and promote activities to promote resident and faculty well-being.
Liaison Functions
A PGY3 Enhanced Skills Program Director will need to liaise with Program Directors of other specialty services to discuss resident evaluations, curriculum development, training opportunities and to resolve conflicts pertaining to these rotations.

Reporting
