In Memoriam: Dr. Jack Taunton

On behalf of the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Family Practice and the Section of Sports and Exercise Medicine, it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Jack Taunton, professor emeritus, physician, researcher and beloved colleague. His loss leaves a big hole in our sport and exercise medicine community, not only at UBC but across the province and country as a whole.

A UBC alumnus and early trail blazer in sport and exercise medicine, Jack was often referred to as the “father of running in B.C.,” having co-founded a number of organizations and initiatives including the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre, SportMedBC, the BC Wellness Program and the popular Vancouver Sun Run which inspires thousands to get active each year.

As a physician, researcher, educator, innovator and mentor, Jack advanced our understanding of the importance of exercise medicine and injury prevention. Serving as the Director of the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre for more than 25 years, Jack also worked with athletes as both a doctor and a coach, and provided guidance and mentorship to launch the careers of almost 50 graduate and post-doctoral learners here at UBC.

Jack was an accomplished athlete, having completed more than 60 marathons and volunteered at several Olympic and Paralympic games. In 2000, he served as the Chief Medical Officer at the Sydney Olympics and again in 2010 for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and Paralympics.

Earlier this year, Jack was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his tremendous contributions and service to the field of sports medicine and the community.

Jack touched the lives and was a loyal friend of many in the UBC community and beyond. He will be greatly missed. Jack’s contributions and legacy have made a profound impact and will continue to inspire us all. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife Cheryl, daughters Carla and Kristen, and the entire Taunton family.
