Talk Abstract

In this presentation, Dr. Hale will discuss the environmental impacts of research and how the principles of environmentally sustainable healthcare can be applied. She will present practical examples, guidelines and opportunities for more environmentally sustainable research and demonstrate the links between sustainable research and high quality, ethical research.

  • Identify the connections between planetary health and human health
  • Recognize the important opportunities for providers to address many of today’s health challenges by using the principles of sustainable healthcare
  • Describe practical examples of sustainable health care practices in day-to-day clinical work

Speaker Bios

Dr. Ilona Hale MD, FCFP

Dr. Hale is a rural family physician, Medical Director for Climate Change and Sustainability for the Interior Health Authority, Clinical Assistant Professor with the UBC Department of Family Practice and  Clinical Advisor for Low Carbon, High Quality Care with Health Quality BC. She lives with her husband, Dave, in a net zero home on a biointensive organic farm near Kimberley, BC. Her passion for the environment stems from her love of nature and concern for the future of her two young adult sons and the generations to follow. Combining this with her interest in improving quality of care, she is focusing on ways to reduce the environmental impact of healthcare. She has recently led the production of a national guide to Planetary Health in Primary Care  https://cascadescanada.ca/resources/sustainable-primary-care-toolkit/ and is also working on incorporating environmental sustainability into quality improvement.
