Leadership Announcement | UBC Department of Family Practice Welcomes Dr. Margaret Manville as Director, Undergraduate Program

The UBC Department of Family Practice is pleased to announce Dr. Margaret Manville as the incoming Director of our Undergraduate Program. Her appointment will begin as of July 1, 2025.

Dr. Manville is a UBC clinical Associate Professor who has held key medical education leadership roles as the inaugural site Scholarship Lead for Strathcona FM Residency Program, an Island Medical Program (IMP) Master Teacher, and for the last 8 years as IMP Site Director for Years 1-2 Family Medicine. Dr. Manville graduated from UBC medicine in 1997 and completed her residency in Victoria in 1999.  Her family medicine career has brought her to the wilds of Northern Ontario, rural Vancouver Island, and urban Victoria. She has training as a Fellow in Care of the Elderly in Ottawa (2002), and as a UBC Clinical Scholar (2012). With a focused clinical practice in Long-Term Care (LTC), and as the LTC Medical Director for Island Health, Dr. Manville embodies the value of family medicine training in all aspects of her clinical, educational, and leadership roles.

Dr. Manville receives the executive baton from Dr. Meera Anand, who has been the Director of the Undergraduate Program since December 2023. “It has been a privilege to oversee Family Medicine training across years 1-4 of the Undergraduate Program,” says Dr. Anand. “I am constantly humbled by the dedication of our teams and preceptors across the province. The success of the Undergraduate Program would not be possible without their passion and hard work.”

“Meera brought enthusiasm and experience from her work in both undergraduate and postgraduate family medicine, including innovations in curriculum mapping that is being adopted by other institutions. She has also been critical in establishing our department’s strong connections with existing and new preceptors during a challenging time,” says Department Head Dr. Robert Petrella.

Dr. Meera Anand

“The alignment between undergraduate and postgraduate family medicine is critical as we take on the urgent task of training the next generation of family physicians to fulfill the needs and expectations of British Columbians,” Dr. Petrella continues. “Margaret has vast experience in education leadership, both within our department and within the region. As the incoming Undergraduate Director, she is ideally positioned to leverage her expertise to expand on the foundations we have built under Meera’s guidance. I am looking forward to Margaret’s leadership as she joins us for our strategic planning process over the next year.”

With a keen interest in the recruitment, retention, and recognition of the Department’s dedicated preceptors, Dr. Manville is ready to bring her experience to the DFP executive team. “The Family Medicine curriculum is one of the most important aspects of our medical program at UBC. Our program cannot thrive without strong and supported teaching faculty. Strengthening our impact by working on a united and spiraled curriculum in years 1-4 will benefit all students, no matter their chosen career path,” she says. “I am looking forward to building strategic partnerships in the implementation and improvement of the provincial family medicine program alongside clinical faculty, administrators, students and patients. It is a privilege to do this work.”

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Margaret Manville as she steps into her new leadership position with the Department of Family Practice. Join us, also, in wishing Dr. Meera Anand all the best as she takes on a new leadership role with the Simon Fraser University School of Medicine in the Surrey region.
