Job Description
The Postgraduate Program in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the CCFP-EM Program Simulation Lead position within the Family Practice Enhanced Skills Program.
The CCFP-EM Program is a comprehensive training program, which creates expertise in emergency medicine. There are currently 20.0 FTE (20 residents in a one year training position) CCFP-EM Enhanced Skills resident positions per year, although numbers are variable based on government funding. These residents are dispersed across 5 training sites: Vancouver (7), Surrey (7), Nanaimo (2), Kamloops (2) and Prince George (2). The Program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
This position involves working with the CCFP-EM Program Director(s), Site Directors, and local SIM Leads/Technicians to organize, facilitate and debrief medical simulation for UBC’s CCFP-EM residents. It is anticipated that the position will require the equivalent of 0.06 FTE [approx $10,500 per annum] and will be of a term of one year to start, with a 3-year term to follow after successful completion of the first year. The Simulation Lead is assisted by administrative staff.
Applicants must be a certificant of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) or equivalent, or be willing to obtain CCFP certification within four years. They must be licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. Educational and administrative experiences in residency training are preferred. Specific SIM training, debrief training, and/or a SIM fellowship are assets.

Roles & Responsibilities
The Medical Simulation Director will work with the Program Director(s), Site Directors, and local SIM Leads/Technicians to organize, facilitate and debrief medical simulation for UBC’s CCFP-EM residents. Specific duties include:
- ADMINISTRATION
- Attend CCFP-EM RPC meetings (4x annually)
- Collaborate with RPC to evaluate simulation goals annually (Continuous Quality Improvement – CQI) and align them with broader curriculum objectives and policies.
- CURRICULUM
- Orientation Week
- Organize and facilitate Medical Simulation Day, including orientation to Principles of Medical Simulation and Debrief.
- Organize and facilitate UBC Cadaver Lab, including distribution of pre-reading/videos.
- Medical Simulation
- Work with the Program Director(s) to plan monthly SIM cases in alignment with the central curriculum.
- Lead ongoing case development
- Lead CQI for existing cases
- Solicit resident and facilitator feedback for ongoing CQI
- Integrate simulations to mimic real-world challenges faced in different sites or settings.
- Procedural Simulation
- Gradually develop a parallel Procedural Simulation Curriculum

- Orientation Week
- OPERATIONS
- Lead Medical Simulation Debrief Training for Facilitators (1x annually), according to a standard protocol (to be determined in conjunction with Program Directors).
- Develop a checklist-based evaluation (or similar) for facilitator performance during debrief sessions (in the spirit of CQI and supporting facilitator faculty development).
- Liaise with Program Administrators to:
- Recruit and schedule local SIM facilitators
- Facilitate SIM scheduling, including distribution of residents and facilitators to ensure appropriately sized learner groups
- Liaise with local SIM Technicians to:
- Maintain inventory of available SIM equipment per site
- Coordinate space bookings, equipment and technician support
- Develop/maintain in situ medical simulation opportunities
- Lead Medical Simulation Debrief Training for Facilitators (1x annually), according to a standard protocol (to be determined in conjunction with Program Directors).
- INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION
- The SIM Director should liaise with local Site Leads and/or local RN and RT leadership to invite colleagues to participate in SIM (particularly in the latter 6 months of the curriculum, January through June).

- FINANCES
- SIM may be funded in collaboration with the Rural Coordination Centre, local sites, local health authorities, and UBC. The SIM Director should develop an understanding of this complex funding structure.
- As the program needs evolve, the SIM Director will work with Program Directors and relevant stakeholders for Capital Requests.
- (with the Program Directors) Forecast expected simulation expenses and outline projected costs for upcoming initiatives, including new task trainers or high-fidelity equipment.

- FUTURE DIRECTIONS
- Develop a Facilitator Debrief training module to be completed annually for new facilitators.
- Consider regular faculty development workshops for local SIM leads to ensure consistent delivery across sites.
- Increase Medical Simulation capacity such that each resident could lead a Medical Simulation Case monthly (4-7 cases/month)
- Developing a Procedural Simulation Curriculum
- Develop a digital repository for simulation cases, debriefing guidelines, and procedural videos to be used across the distributed curriculum.
- Develop a SIM team and a friendly SIM Olympics between all five sites in June.
- Establish an online platform (e.g. Microsoft Teams or a secure, UBC-approved, scheduling app) for transparency and real-time updates on simulation schedules.
- Develop a centralized digital inventory accessible to all sites for resource sharing and tracking across the distributed EM program.
- Develop a Facilitator Debrief training module to be completed annually for new facilitators.
