Talk Abstract
Current literature reveals several challenges and nuances of translating Western medical concepts into languages other than English. Here in British Columbia, where a proportion of the population considers English a learned language rather than mother tongue, it is critical to better understand how to communicate health information with efficacy and acceptability. This talk describes how our team developed English-language workbook materials for an addiction recovery program and translated them into Panjabi, documenting the process throughout. We reflect on the challenges, benefits, and importance of this work, highlighting effective strategies for bridging linguistic and conceptual gaps. These insights aim to inform future healthcare translation projects and promote culturally relevant approaches to health communication.
