Program Director – UBC Family Practice Enhanced Skills CCFP-EM Program

Job Description

The Postgraduate Program of the Department of Family Practice, University of British Columbia, invites applications from Family Physicians for the position of Program Director for CCFP-EM, with the Family Practice Enhanced Skills Residency Program.

This is a comprehensive training program, which creates expertise in emergency medicine. The endpoint is the creation of community leaders in this area of medicine. There are currently 20.0 FTE (20 residents in a one year training position) CCFP-EM Enhanced Skills resident positions per year, although numbers are variable based on government funding. These residents are dispersed across 5 training sites: Vancouver (St. Paul’s Hospital – 7), Surrey (7), Nanaimo (2), Kamloops (2) and Prince George (2). The Program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Applicants should hold their CCFP-EM designation from the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and be licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.  Educational and administrative experiences in residency training are preferred.

The successful candidate will have a proven record of leadership, excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and clinical expertise in the field of Emergency Medicine. They should be committed to providing a high-quality experience in Emergency Medicine that is grounded in principles and competencies of Family Practice.  They should have the vision and commitment to building the capacity of UBC Emergency Medicine training across the province.

The position involves supervision of training, including curriculum development, evaluation and mentoring of residents for one year of residency training, faculty development, and participation with provincial emergency medicine educational initiatives. The position requires close communication and collaboration with both the Department of Family Practice and the Department of Emergency Medicine. The position also requires oversite of 5 Site Directors within the program, one for each of the 5 training sites (Vancouver, Surrey, Nanaimo, Kamloops, Prince George). It is anticipated that the position will require the equivalent of approximately 1.5 days per week [approx $52,500 per annum] and will be of a term of one year to start, with a 3-year term to follow after successful completion of the first year. The Program Director will be responsible for the overall administration and direction of the CCFP-EM Program at its various sites. The incumbent reports to the Enhanced Skills Program Director(s) (ES Co-PD’s). The Director is a member of the Enhanced Skills Resident Program Committee and works closely with the ES Co-PD’s, the Department of Family Practice, and the Emergency Medicine faculty in the delivery of the program.

Strategic Leadership / Collaboration

Develop a positive working relationship and collaborate with:

  • The Enhanced Skills Program Director(s), other Enhanced Skills Category 1 Program Directors and Category 2 Program Leads, EM Site Directors, and administrative staff.
  • The Family Practice Postgraduate Program Director(s) and Family Practice Department Head.
  • The Program Director of the UBC Royal College Emergency Medicine Program, and the Department Head of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine

Curriculum and Program Delivery

  • Ensure that residents are properly oriented to the UBC environment and their program including all program policies and expectations.
  • Oversee the EM training sites including Vancouver, Surrey, Nanaimo, Kamloops, and Prince George. This includes overseeing the leadership at these sites in the form of Site Directors.
  • Oversee the implementation of the PGY3 educational program for residents including the development and monitoring of the delivery of the formal teaching curriculum for the residents.
  • Work collaboratively with, and oversee the SIM lead for, the EM program to ensure a robust SIM training experience.
  • Encourage and promote novel teaching/learning models within the EM program.
  • Ensure the emphasis on and connection to family practice throughout the continuum of the resident training.
  • Ensure residents are prepared for clinical duties by attending to College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC educational licensure and prescribing privileges and UBC PGME requirements.
  • Encourage and promote activities to promote resident and faculty well-being.

Quality Improvement and Accreditation

  • Undertake cyclical program evaluations in order to review and implement program-wide improvements to training locations, curriculum, faculty development, and preceptor assessment in a CQI process.
  • Ensure that standards are maintained for their program as outlined in the Standards of Accreditation for Residency Programs (The Red Book) from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • Prepare for and participate in all accreditation and accreditation-related activities.
  • Collaborate with the residents in their program to review the training program, identify problem areas and develop strategies to improve the delivery of the Enhanced Skills program.
  • Assist with the development and oversight of any future training sites for the EM program.

Resident and Faculty Development

  • Take a leading role in the resident selection process for the EM program.
  • Assist with residents in difficulty by collaborating with the resident, preceptors, and the Co-Directors of the PGY3 Enhanced Skills program. Assist in the development of learning plans and/or remediation contracts if deemed necessary.
  • Provide support to preceptors to assist in the timely completion of online evaluations of, and verbal feedback to, residents.
  • Assist with the timely delivery of feedback to preceptors.
  • Provide faculty development opportunities for preceptors and support those preceptors in need.

  • Reports to the Enhanced Skills Co-Program Directors and provides regular reports to the Enhanced Skills Residency Program Committee
