R3 Enhanced Skills Program Openings

The Department of Family Practice offers a number of residency positions for family physicians in the province of British Columbia for the purpose of developing specific advanced skills. These positions represent a commitment on the part of the department, and the Faculty of Medicine, to respond to community needs in an effective way.

UBC Enhanced Skills Category 2 Programs

Category 2: 8 weeks to 6 months

The UBC Enhanced Skills Enhanced Skills Program is currently offering training opportunities in a variety of Category 2 programs for the July 2024 – June 2025 year, including: Hospital Medicine (6 months), Global Health (6 months), Addiction Medicine (3 months), Indigenous Health (3 months), H2SUM (3 months), GP Oncology (8 weeks to 3 months) and Self-Designed (8 weeks to 3 months).

Enhanced Skills programs are fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Category 2 Programs do not hold National curriculum standards, but are instead tailored to meet the goals and objectives of each individual resident.

Successful applicants will either hold their CCFP or be eligible to attain it within the year of Enhanced Skills training.

This is a PGY3 position with corresponding salary, benefits and expectations.

UBC Enhanced Skills Clinician Scholar Program

Category 1: 2 Years Part-Time

The UBC Enhanced Skills Clinician Scholar Program is currently seeking applicants to begin in July of 2024. This program provides an opportunity for practicing physicians to continue their clinical work while also focusing on scholarly projects. It is an established, accredited Category 1 program that is completed at 50% FTE over a 2-year period. The program can be completed remotely, without in-person requirements.

Successful applicants will either hold their CCFP or be eligible to attain it within the year of Enhanced Skills training.

UBC Enhanced Skills Care of the Elderly

Category 1 Sixth-Month Program

The UBC Enhanced Skills Care of the Elderly Program is offering a 6-month re-entry training opportunity to begin within the Jul 1, 2024 – Jun 30, 2025 academic year. This is an established, accredited Category 1 program based in the Lower Mainland of BC (Vancouver and surrounding area). On successful completion, the resident will be eligible for a Certificate of Added Competence in Care of the Elderly.

Successful applicants will either hold their CCFP or be eligible to attain it within the year of Enhanced Skills training.

This is a PGY3 position with corresponding salary, benefits and expectations in terms of call/service provision.

UBC Enhanced Skills Obstetrical Surgical Skills

Category 1 Sixth-Month Program

The UBC Enhanced Skills Obstetrical Surgical Skills Program is offering a 6-month re-entry training opportunity to begin within the Jul 1, 2024 – Jun 30, 2025 academic year. This is an established, accredited Category 1 program based at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The program is designed to meet the needs of a family physician practicing low to medium risk obstetrics in a setting where they will be on call for operative deliveries and management of obstetrical complications. On successful completion, the resident will be eligible for a Certificate of Added Competence in OSS.


Successful applicants will either hold their CCFP or be eligible to attain it within the year of Enhanced Skills training.
